Franz Josef Glacier (KΔ Roimata o Hine Hukatere) is found in New Zealand’s South Island. It is arguably one of the main attractions in the West Coast. However, the glacier has been retreating since 2008 (another reason to visit this gem sooner rather than later) due to a sharp rise in global temperatures. If you want to see the Franz Josef Glacier up close, you have three options. One, you can walk/ hike to the closest view point as marked by the Department of Conservation. Two, you can fly around the glacier in a helicopter. And three, you can fly to the top of the glacier itself and go on a guided hike among massive ice walls and caves.
